(CNN) -- He has been at the center of Asia's biggest sex scandal, but now actor Edison Chen has broken his silence on the public episode that has ended careers and caused him to face at least one reported death threat.

Talking exclusively to CNN on his return to Hong Kong, where he had been forging a career in the movies, Chen reveals his side of the scandal that broke in early last year when hundreds of sexually explicit photos of Chen with other celebrities turned up on the Internet. "There's been a lot of talk through the past year and a half about this or that and a lot of rumors, a lot of hearsay, and I feel, you know, I've kept quiet just to kind of respect everyone and respect the law," Chen told CNN.
A Hong Kong computer technician was sentenced to more than eight-and-a-half months in jail for dishonestly obtaining access to the intimate photos when Chen sent his computer in for repairs. But it is still unclear exactly how the images made their way to the web.
The photographs caused shock in Hong Kong and across Asia, with around 1,300 salacious images fueling front page news for tabloids for weeks.
There was also a huge public backlash against the 28-year-old who has been one of the rising young stars of Asia cinema. After the scandal broke, Chen, who admitted taking the photos, announced his retirement from Hong Kong's entertainment business and fled to his native Canada.
Added to the media attention, Chen says he faced death threats. A bullet was sent to a TV station in Hong Kong earlier this year warning the entertainer to stay out of the limelight. While Chen issued his own apology for any hurt or embarrassment caused soon after the photos surfaced, he maintains he suffered as well.
"I believed I was a victim. I believed that I was hurt by this a lot. I believed that...I knew that I had nothing to do with the spreading of these photos," he told CNN in the exclusive interview.
"I can't say I didn't do anything wrong. I've admitted that I was wrong, and I wouldn't say sorry if I wasn't wrong. But I also believe that at the same time that I wasn't the perpetrator, and I had suffered a lot from this as well."
Chen has suffered a spectacular fall from grace and some of the starlets in the photos have endured public disgrace in this culturally conservative region. For some, careers have been left in ruins.
Chen says he has not spoken to any of the women identified in the photos since the scandal broke. "Initially it was because I couldn't find them. Secondly, it was because I didn't really know how to approach and really what to say to be honest with you," Chen told CNN.
Cecilia Cheung was one of the actresses identified in the photos and in a recent interview, she had strong criticism for Chen.
"I wasn't allowed to talk to her in the initial because of the police request and they were investigating me...I had so much things on my mind," said Chen. advertisement

SEX photos, involving disgraced Hong Kong pop star Edison Chen and a string of starlets, were taken with the women's full consent, Chen has claimed in the latest twist to a celebrity saga involving more than a thousand explicit photos. In an interview with CNN's Talk Asia, the Canadian-born star said the photos, which caused a scandal when they found their way on to the internet last year, had been taken with the agreement of the women.
"Everything was mutual. It was all consensual," he said in the interview, which is planned to air on Wednesday.
"If I have a camera in front of your face and there's a flash, do you know that I'm taking a photo of you? That's as simple as it is."
More than 1300 photos, which show Chen and the women in compromising positions, shocked many in the celebrity-obsessed but culturally conservative city and ruined the careers of some of the actresses and singers involved.
Chen apologised in the interview to one of the actresses, Cecilia Cheung, who had earlier criticised him for not saying sorry.
"I wasn't allowed to talk to her in the initial(stages) because of the police request...I really do feel sorry. I really am sorry to her."
A Hong Kong computer technician was last month jailed for eight-and-a-half months for stealing the photos from Chen's laptop when he sent it for repairs. But it is still unclear how the photos made their way on to the web.
After their internet appearance in February last year, they became one of the most searched-for items in Asia, where Hong Kong celebrities are huge stars.
Soon after, Chen, whose albums and film appearances made him one of Asia's biggest entertainment stars, announced his retirement from the Hong Kong entertainment scene and fled to his childhood home of Canada.
"I was afraid to go anywhere. I was travelling around when I was still in Hong Kong in trunks of taxis, literally, just to get to places," he told CNN.
"I had to be in the trunk for 15 minutes. I didn't even know if I had enough oxygen, to be honest with you.
"Even when I had left Asia and I... went to Canada and America, it took me three months to really get out of the shell that I had put myself in. I mean, I was in darkness for five days.

'I showed everything to everyone, and no matter what I do, I'll get the blame. But dignity is the most important thing,' she said. Gillian broke her silence more than a year after the incident in an interview on TVB's Be My Guest series, hosted by TVB general manager Stephen Chan Chi Wan.
The interview is due to be screened today, reported the South China Morning Post.
In an excerpt of the interview aired on the evening news in Hong Kong earlier this week, Gillian said that she was so devastated after the scandal broke last January that she thought about killing herself.
When asked who she blamed most for the scandal, a teary-eyed Gillian, who is half of Cantopop duo Twins, replied: 'I blame myself - I blame myself for all of it.
'I blame myself for doing something so stupid.'
She added that the scandal had put 'immense stress' on her, and that she had briefly contemplated suicide, because she was 'disillusioned' and 'could not see a future for herself'.
She said: 'But if I died, all my problems will be passed on to the people around me - the people who care about me would be very sad.
'That's why I eventually banished that thought (of suicide).'
Why did she do it?
When asked why she took the photos, the singer said: 'I don't know... Maybe I don't want to lose...'
But she did not elaborate.
Gillian's interview came just days after a similar interview with Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung, 28, another celebrity caught up in the scandal.
Other victims include Bobo Chan and Rachel Ngan.
In Cecilia's interview, the first half of which was broadcast on Friday, the actress burst into tears and slammed Edison for failing to protect, console or apologise to the women who were affected by the incident.
She was responding to Edison's remarks during a special hearing in a Canadian court last month.
Edison said he was 'determined to protect the girls' innocence', and told the court that the pictures of various celebrities in compromising positions were posted on the Internet after his laptop was stolen.
A Hong Kong technician has been charged with illegally posting the pictures online.
The scandal, which made front page news all over Hong Kong when the pictures were first released, is seeing a huge amount of renewed interest thanks to the court case, as well as Edison's first public appearance.
The actor was in Singapore earlier this month for two corporate events.
Some pundits in the Hong Kong media have speculated that the interviews with Cecilia and Gillian have been timed to torpedo Edison's hopes of reviving his flagging career.

— A Hong Kong pop star contemplated suicide after explicit photos of her with another famous singer were plastered on the Internet last year, a report said Friday.
Gillian Chung, half of Canto-pop duo Twins, said she was devastated when photos of her with actor Edison Chen appeared on the Web, the South China Morning Post reported. Chung said the idea of killing herself was only fleeting, the newspaper said.
"If I died, all my problems will be passed on to the people around me, the people who care about me," she said in a television interview due to be screened on Saturday, according to the Post.
Chung was one of several starlets pictured in compromising positions with Chen, who has told a court the images were posted on the Web after his computer was stolen.
Chung said she lost all her dignity when the photos were released.

Here are the silohettes of the celebrities implicated so far, along with a description of each, wich does not reveal their actual names. VETERAN Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse feels betrayed by his daughter-in-law Cecilia Cheung, who was among a string of starlets and celebrities whose photos of their sexploits with singer-actor Edison Chen were splashed over the the Net in recent weeks.
Hollywoodgrind.com reported that while he sympathised with Cecilia for the humiliation she has suffered, he felt that she has put the marriage of his son Nicholas Tse and her son Lucas' future in jeopardy.
Quoting a source, the website said the elder Tse is encouraging his son to get a paternity test done soon.
But at a recent Chinese New Year celebration event, Patrick refused to comment when pressed by the media about his son's marriage to Cecilia in the wake of the sex scandal.
It has been reported that she and Nicholas have signed a separation agreement. This was denied by Patrick Tse.
Cecilia was due to become the new face of L'Oreal in a multi-million contract before the scandal exploded, but this may be up in the air now, said reports.
Meanwhile, Candice Chan, another Edison's ex-flame who was involved in the scandal, is reported to have cancelled her wedding which she has been planning.

HONG KONG singer-actor Edison Chen, who quit showbiz last week in the wake of the sex photo scandal fallout, proposed to his girlfriend Vincy Yeung four times to try to get protection from triad revenge, a Hollywood gossip website has reported.
Yeung, 19, is a university student in Boston in the US. Her uncle is chairman of the Emperor Group of companies. She and Chen have been dating since 2004 and came out as a couple in 2006. He once said that he would marry her when he had earned US$20 million (S$28.3 million).
Some members of Yeung's triad family want Chen dead after explicit photographs of Edison with actresses and pop stars were plastered across the Internet over the past few weeks. But other members are trying to protect the Canadian-born actor, who went into hiding in Boston.
A report in hollywoodgrind.com on Feb 23 said Chen had hoped that marrying Yeung would show that he has changed into a family man, and is no longer a sex maniac and womaniser.
But Yeung apparently turned down his marriage proposal after discussing the issue with her family.
Some earlier reports said Chen threatened to slit his wrists if Yeung did not marry him, but these have been denied by the actor.
The Hollywoodgrind report also said that Yeung's family had suggested to Chen that he seek treatment for his addiction to sex, whch he did so.
He is said to have checked into a rehabilitation centre in Utah, but after left after a few days when he was attacked by several of the other male residents in the place in a parking lot during a break. The group of men threatened, kicked, and punched him. Edison left immediately and travelled to Vancouver, British Columbia to stay with his mother.
Chen then flew to California to meet movie executives in Hollywood to try and get work in upcoming movies. During this time, he started negotiating with police in Hong Kong to avoid prosecution, and for protection, before returning to Hong Kong.
He returned to Boston to see Yeung one last time before returning to Hong Kong on Feb 21 to face the media.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the scandal broke, Chen admitted taking the photos but said they had been stolen from him. Canadian-born Chen, 27, said he had returned to Hong Kong to account for himself.
'I would like now to apologise to all the people for all the suffering that has been caused and the problems that have arisen from this,' he said, reading a statement in English to a packed press conference.
'I would like to apologise to all the ladies and to all their families for any harm or hurt that they have been feeling. I am sorry,' he said.
The racy photos which purportedly show him in compromising positions with various celebrities, including Canto-pop star Gillian Chung, actress Cecilia Cheung and former actress Bobo Chan, were copied from Chen's computer when he sent it in for repairs.

According to ESWN, Jolin Tsai says NT$100 million would be given to the person who came up with the photo while Elva Hsiao says that she will donate NT$100 million to charity.

Ltd) warned all medias in a statement not to publish any un-confirmed report or internet rumor that accuses of her connection with the scandal, or else, the company will demand "unlimited" compensation for the damages caused for Jolin. A lot has happened to Edison Chen, the marginally talented Hong Kong-based actor/singer who rose to international prominence after nude pictures of him with a coterie of Asian starlets ended up on the Internet, since we last checked in! It is now being floated that Chen himself plotted to leak the photos in an attempt to facilitate his transition from Hong Kong cinema to Hollywood, where whoring yourself out for attention isn't a source of national shame but rather a holistic life approach.
