(CNN) -- He has been at the center of Asia's biggest sex scandal, but now actor Edison Chen has broken his silence on the public episode that has ended careers and caused him to face at least one reported death threat.

Talking exclusively to CNN on his return to Hong Kong, where he had been forging a career in the movies, Chen reveals his side of the scandal that broke in early last year when hundreds of sexually explicit photos of Chen with other celebrities turned up on the Internet. "There's been a lot of talk through the past year and a half about this or that and a lot of rumors, a lot of hearsay, and I feel, you know, I've kept quiet just to kind of respect everyone and respect the law," Chen told CNN.
A Hong Kong computer technician was sentenced to more than eight-and-a-half months in jail for dishonestly obtaining access to the intimate photos when Chen sent his computer in for repairs. But it is still unclear exactly how the images made their way to the web.
The photographs caused shock in Hong Kong and across Asia, with around 1,300 salacious images fueling front page news for tabloids for weeks.
There was also a huge public backlash against the 28-year-old who has been one of the rising young stars of Asia cinema. After the scandal broke, Chen, who admitted taking the photos, announced his retirement from Hong Kong's entertainment business and fled to his native Canada.
Added to the media attention, Chen says he faced death threats. A bullet was sent to a TV station in Hong Kong earlier this year warning the entertainer to stay out of the limelight. While Chen issued his own apology for any hurt or embarrassment caused soon after the photos surfaced, he maintains he suffered as well.
"I believed I was a victim. I believed that I was hurt by this a lot. I believed that...I knew that I had nothing to do with the spreading of these photos," he told CNN in the exclusive interview.
"I can't say I didn't do anything wrong. I've admitted that I was wrong, and I wouldn't say sorry if I wasn't wrong. But I also believe that at the same time that I wasn't the perpetrator, and I had suffered a lot from this as well."
Chen has suffered a spectacular fall from grace and some of the starlets in the photos have endured public disgrace in this culturally conservative region. For some, careers have been left in ruins.
Chen says he has not spoken to any of the women identified in the photos since the scandal broke. "Initially it was because I couldn't find them. Secondly, it was because I didn't really know how to approach and really what to say to be honest with you," Chen told CNN.
Cecilia Cheung was one of the actresses identified in the photos and in a recent interview, she had strong criticism for Chen.
"I wasn't allowed to talk to her in the initial because of the police request and they were investigating me...I had so much things on my mind," said Chen. advertisement

SEX photos, involving disgraced Hong Kong pop star Edison Chen and a string of starlets, were taken with the women's full consent, Chen has claimed in the latest twist to a celebrity saga involving more than a thousand explicit photos. In an interview with CNN's Talk Asia, the Canadian-born star said the photos, which caused a scandal when they found their way on to the internet last year, had been taken with the agreement of the women.
"Everything was mutual. It was all consensual," he said in the interview, which is planned to air on Wednesday.
"If I have a camera in front of your face and there's a flash, do you know that I'm taking a photo of you? That's as simple as it is."
More than 1300 photos, which show Chen and the women in compromising positions, shocked many in the celebrity-obsessed but culturally conservative city and ruined the careers of some of the actresses and singers involved.
Chen apologised in the interview to one of the actresses, Cecilia Cheung, who had earlier criticised him for not saying sorry.
"I wasn't allowed to talk to her in the initial(stages) because of the police request...I really do feel sorry. I really am sorry to her."
A Hong Kong computer technician was last month jailed for eight-and-a-half months for stealing the photos from Chen's laptop when he sent it for repairs. But it is still unclear how the photos made their way on to the web.
After their internet appearance in February last year, they became one of the most searched-for items in Asia, where Hong Kong celebrities are huge stars.
Soon after, Chen, whose albums and film appearances made him one of Asia's biggest entertainment stars, announced his retirement from the Hong Kong entertainment scene and fled to his childhood home of Canada.
"I was afraid to go anywhere. I was travelling around when I was still in Hong Kong in trunks of taxis, literally, just to get to places," he told CNN.
"I had to be in the trunk for 15 minutes. I didn't even know if I had enough oxygen, to be honest with you.
"Even when I had left Asia and I... went to Canada and America, it took me three months to really get out of the shell that I had put myself in. I mean, I was in darkness for five days.

A Hong Kong computer technician was convicted today of stealing the racy photos of actor-singer Edison Chen that shocked the Chinese-speaking world when they were circulated on the internet last year. The photos showed Chen performing sex acts with eight Hong Kong actresses and singers. They caused an uproar in the socially conservative ethnic Chinese community and forced the Chinese-Canadian entertainer and the other stars to take extended breaks.
The technician, Sze Ho-chun, was convicted of three counts of accessing a computer for dishonest gains and was remanded to custody pending sentencing in two weeks, Sze's lawyer, Kelvin Lai, told The Associated Press in a phone interview.
Lai said it wasn't immediately clear if Sze will appeal.
Television footage showed Sze arriving at court for the verdict wearing a surgical mask and sunglasses, with his head covered by a hat and a hooded jacket.
Magistrate Tong Man said Sze committed a serious crime by betraying the trust of his client and that he will likely sentence the technician to a prison term, radio RTHK reported on its website.
Prosecutors said during trial that Sze copied the photos from Chen's laptop when it was dropped off for repairs and gave other clients copies of the pictures on a compact disc.
Chen testified against the technician and identified several of the women featured in the photos at a deposition in Vancouver, Canada in February.
None of the female celebrities — including singer Gillian Chung and actress Cecilia Cheung — were required to appear during the 10-day trial.
Chen appeared in the 2002 hit Hong Kong police thriller 'Infernal Affairs,' which Martin Scorsese remade as 'The Departed,' and in the 2006 horror movie 'The Grudge 2' alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. He also had a cameo in the Hollywood blockbuster "The Dark Knight," released last year.

In an excerpt of the interview aired on the evening news in Hong Kong earlier this week, Gillian said that she was so devastated after the scandal broke last January that she thought about killing herself.
When asked who she blamed most for the scandal, a teary-eyed Gillian, who is half of Cantopop duo Twins, replied: 'I blame myself - I blame myself for all of it.
'I blame myself for doing something so stupid.'
She added that the scandal had put 'immense stress' on her, and that she had briefly contemplated suicide, because she was 'disillusioned' and 'could not see a future for herself'.
She said: 'But if I died, all my problems will be passed on to the people around me - the people who care about me would be very sad.
'That's why I eventually banished that thought (of suicide).'
Why did she do it?
When asked why she took the photos, the singer said: 'I don't know... Maybe I don't want to lose...'
But she did not elaborate.
Gillian's interview came just days after a similar interview with Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung, 28, another celebrity caught up in the scandal.
Other victims include Bobo Chan and Rachel Ngan.
In Cecilia's interview, the first half of which was broadcast on Friday, the actress burst into tears and slammed Edison for failing to protect, console or apologise to the women who were affected by the incident.
She was responding to Edison's remarks during a special hearing in a Canadian court last month.
Edison said he was 'determined to protect the girls' innocence', and told the court that the pictures of various celebrities in compromising positions were posted on the Internet after his laptop was stolen.
A Hong Kong technician has been charged with illegally posting the pictures online.
The scandal, which made front page news all over Hong Kong when the pictures were first released, is seeing a huge amount of renewed interest thanks to the court case, as well as Edison's first public appearance.
The actor was in Singapore earlier this month for two corporate events.

Jolin Tsai (蔡依林) arrived in Hong Kong yesterday afternoon, ahead of a concert being held by her sponsor Pepsi.
The songstress looked glum when she got to Hong Kong airport, wearing shades and clutching a Hermes handbag, but lit up when greeted with fans who presented her with a Hello Kitty doll. Asked by reporters about her thoughts on her rumoured ex-boyfriend, Edison Chen (陳冠希), being dropped by Pepsi after his sex photos scandal, Jolin said: "The Pepsi family has many people."
Asked by reporters if she was implying that Edison was disposable, she responded: "That's not what I meant."
Jolin's rumoured current boyfriend Show Luo (羅志祥) arrived at Hong Kong airport yesterday evening, also to take part in the Pepsi concert. He was greeted by over 100 fans who waited in the arrivals hall.

Edison’s estranged parents have since apologized following the celebrity’s public show of remorse. They have blamed themselves for not bringing up their son well.
Mr Baey further commented : “This is indeed a very real example of the negative impact on children growing up in dysfunctional families.”

It is rumored that Kira only has just over 1300 photos out of the total 10,000 found by HK police. Kira (the person who has been releasing these photos on the internet) has about 900 photos he has yet to release. He tried to sell the photos in Hong Kong but there were no interested party. Instead he sold this set of photos to Mohd Ali, rumoured to be a businessman in Malaysia, for a handsome price of US$500,000.

It must be really silly of the police to reveal that they have found more female celebrities pictures in Edison’s computers but yet not reveal the names. Various newspapers especially the scandalist magazines in Hong Kong have latched onto these and create name lists of their own based on “leaked” information and clues from the police supposedly. This was inevitable since “Kira” disappeared and they had to do follow-up reports on the scandal.
Now in the latest Sudden Weekly magazine, it claims that among the photos newly discovered from Edison’s computer, two of them are actually very famous female starlets. Yes, very famous they stress.
According to sources, the two big female stars enjoy a revered status and has tremendous influence in the industry. They also have good relations with both the wealthy and underground world. If their photos are exposed, Edison would face even greater pressure and possibly incur possible death.
The magazine even released silhouette images of the two female stars so they must have an idea of who exactly they are. On the left is the female starlet who is named, and has two sets of photos. Ten of them shows her wearing her undergarments in a hotel room in different poses. The other 20 photos sees her and another guy together and their actions are linked, possibly screencaps from a video. This female star is reportedly a very beautiful woman possibly in this world. She was very active in her early days in the movie world and had lots of scandals with many stars. No conclusive guesses for who it might be. [A lot of Chinese netizens speculated she is Cherie Chung, but others guess Christy Chung]
The other woman on the right is known as, and is nearing 40 years old. She has appeared in movies over the past 20 years but is gradually moving towards a career in the financial world. Her photos are mostly taken in a hotel and has many close-ups and is quite “racy”. The photos aren’t very clear though and are likely to come from a video. Widely speculated to be Carina Lau. Debuted as a model and is known to have ”pierced rings”. She is of mixed blood and is slightly on the thin sight but her outgoing personality has charmed many guys. She hits it off well with Edison because both of them are “devilish” in nature. They still keep in contact even though they have broken up, and occasionally engage in a fling.
This person has a “big sister” role in the industry and hasn’t dated for quite a few years already. VETERAN Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse feels betrayed by his daughter-in-law Cecilia Cheung, who was among a string of starlets and celebrities whose photos of their sexploits with singer-actor Edison Chen were splashed over the the Net in recent weeks.
Hollywoodgrind.com reported that while he sympathised with Cecilia for the humiliation she has suffered, he felt that she has put the marriage of his son Nicholas Tse and her son Lucas' future in jeopardy.
Quoting a source, the website said the elder Tse is encouraging his son to get a paternity test done soon.
But at a recent Chinese New Year celebration event, Patrick refused to comment when pressed by the media about his son's marriage to Cecilia in the wake of the sex scandal.
It has been reported that she and Nicholas have signed a separation agreement. This was denied by Patrick Tse.
Cecilia was due to become the new face of L'Oreal in a multi-million contract before the scandal exploded, but this may be up in the air now, said reports.
